Andrew Eustace, First Class Accounts – St Ives, Sydney

How long have you been with First Class Accounts, and which term are you currently in?

Started May 2002, and currently in third term

What did you do before joining First Class Accounts?

Spent 25 years working in IT with Colonial State Bank

Why did you choose to become a First Class Accounts bookkeeper?

When Colonial State Bank was sold, I took a redundancy, and decided on a change of direction. I considered various ventures, but when I attended a First Class Accounts Information Seminar, I had a really good “gut feel” about it.
It just went from there.

How do you feel the franchise model, and First Class Accounts in particular, benefits you?

The initial Training was second-to-none:

  • Training in bookkeeping & basic accounting principles
  • Software training in MYOB, Xero, Quickbooks
  • Training in how to market, how to follow up and convert a lead

There is on-going training, with quarterly Regional Training, annual conference, training webinars etc.

This training covers software upgrades, legislation changes, new products. These are all areas where a sole operator would need to do their own research.

There is on-going support from the Franchisor (if needed) in the areas of technical help desk, marketing, and business growth.

The culture of the organization is extraordinary – a real family/team feel. Franchisees really work together, and also with the Franchisor, for the benefit of the entire organization. Everyone seems to understand that a strong and successful partnership, benefits all the individuals within.

What is your name, and where are you located?DonaldDoolan

Don Doolan, from First Class Accounts Asquith, in New South Wales.

How long have you been with First Class Accounts, and which term are you currently in?

I started with First Class Accounts on 1st April, 2012. I’m in my 1st Term.

What did you do before joining First Class Accounts?

My background is as a computer programmer/project manager in accounting systems. However, since 2002, I have owned and operated several businesses, including two Michel’s Patisseries, and a thirty-room motel that also had a 100- seat steakhouse restaurant.

Why did you choose to become a First Class Accounts bookkeeper?

I wanted to build a business that had a more stable and consistent income stream. I have a passion to see small business succeed. I believe the best way I can accomplish this is by helping small business owners from the ground up.

How do you feel the franchise model, and First Class Accounts in particular, benefits you?

The franchise group as a whole is awesome. In my business, I see that the two most important offerings from the franchisor are support and training. At all times, I have had support whenever required. Initially, I needed help learning the software, then I needed help securing clients, then I needed help analysing/implementing solutions for these new clients. Most recently I have migrated from a bookkeeper to having a bookkeeping practice with staff. At all stages I have used the FCA franchise system and the resources provided, and the head office staff have always been available to assist in the process.

I believe that the culture of a franchisor and its franchisees contributes to the happiness of franchisees and, in turn, the success of franchisees and the franchisor. At First Class Accounts, I know it is a cliché, but anyway, we are a family. No matter what help I need, be it from the franchisor or another franchisee, I have access to it at all times. That is something that is created, you can’t buy it.

What have been some of the highlights of your time working as a First Class Accounts bookkeeper?

There are so many. I will list just a few of these in the order that they occurred in my business. No single item is more important than any other.

  • Getting my first client and being able to assist them in such a way that the stress of compliance is removed from them, like a weight off their shoulders.
  • After my first full year received ‘Best Emerging Franchisee’ Award. For a new venture, this kind of recognition is a confirmation that you know you are doing a good job and are heading in the right direction.
  • Obtained my first high-level client – this created a positive cash flow scenario in my business. These clients are weekly clients providing me with consistent cash flow.
  • My wife left employment. Freedom of choice in life is a goal of mine, so reaching one of my goals was very important.
  • Defined my new ‘Ideal Client’ as a higher-level client providing weekly services offsite. Now, 25% of my portfolio is made up of these clients, providing a very solid platform to really launch this business to a higher level.
  • After my second full year, I received the ‘Service to the Brand’ award, and was nominated for ‘Franchisee of the Year’ award. Again, recognition for performing within the franchise, as well as assisting the franchise to grow as a whole is very important to me.
  • Was elected to the Franchisee Advisory Council. Assisting other franchisees to provide feedback to the franchisor, enabling franchise development and growth, is very enjoyable.
  • Created a bookkeeping practice. This is one of the necessary steps to allow me to grow my business to the level I desire. Additionally, this allows me to give back to the brand, as well as being able to provide a higher level of input, and a higher level of value to my clients.
