With a career that spans retail, franchising, and finance, Anthony Furniss has seen the business world from all angles. But it wasn’t until he joined First Class Accounts in 2007 that everything clicked.
Now 17 years into running his own successful bookkeeping franchise in Sydney, Anthony reflects on the journey. From franchise expos and letterbox drops to industry awards, AI, and a few well-earned fly-fishing trips along the way.
From business analyst to business owner: The beginning
Before joining First Class Accounts, Anthony held roles in both finance and franchising. This included a stint owning a Cheesecake Shop franchise, a role at Edgars in South Africa, and work as a business analyst at FlexiRent.
“I really wanted to get into finance and work for myself. But more importantly, we wanted a bit more freedom – to do things when we want to do them.”
Anthony knew the franchise model well and went searching for the right fit. That search took him to a franchise expo at Darling Harbour, where he met several First Class franchisees.
“They were excited, helpful, and infectious. That’s when I knew – this was the one.”
Starting out: building a business from scratch
Like many new business owners, Anthony’s biggest concern was how to find clients.
“I hadn’t been involved in lead generation before. That was a big one for me – I needed support.”
He found that support in the First Class Accounts network, starting with the 13-step marketing program used in early training.
“We did letterbox drops back then. I was lucky – my first drop landed me a client who stayed with me for many years.”
He also valued the ongoing training First Class Accounts provided. Not just at the start, but throughout every stage of his business journey.
“It’s not just one training and you’re done. Every quarter we’ve got something – regional events, conferences, webinars. It keeps you sharp.”
Career highlights: awards, mentorship, and growth
One of Anthony’s proudest achievements came in 2019, when he was inducted into the First Class Accounts Hall of Fame.
“It was a proud moment. It meant the work I’d put into the franchise and my business was recognised.”
He’s also been nominated for other awards over the years and regularly attends FCA information nights to support new and prospective franchisees.
“I enjoy helping people decide to join the network. I’ve been in their shoes, so I’m always happy to answer questions.”
Challenges and changes: a shifting industry
After nearly two decades in the business, Anthony’s seen the landscape shift. Particularly in client expectations and technology.
“Clients today are a lot more tech-savvy. There’s software and AI that can do a lot, but they still need a human eye to make sense of it.”
Some clients have grown too large to keep a solo bookkeeper, while others are retiring. That means finding new clients is now a bigger focus. But also an opportunity to evolve.
“We can automate the mundane tasks and add more value – interpret the numbers, help clients plan for growth. That’s where we make a difference.”
The role of First Class Accounts
When asked how First Class Accounts has shaped his career, Anthony is quick to highlight the structure, community, and continuous innovation.
“They’re always looking ahead. Introducing new software, hosting training, keeping us competitive.”
And for Anthony, one key piece of advice stands out:
“You’re buying a franchise. Use the systems. They’re all there to support you. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel.”
He also encourages new franchisees to attend every event possible.
“I’ve never missed a conference. It’s where you get ideas, meet other franchisees, talk about what’s working. It’s invaluable.”
Personal transformation: growth beyond the business
Running a bookkeeping franchise hasn’t just changed Anthony’s professional life. It’s changed him personally, too.
“I was quite reserved in the beginning. Now I’m comfortable presenting, chatting with new people, helping others.”
More than that, it’s given him time for hobbies, especially one passion: fly fishing.
“The flexibility means I can do what I love. I’ve fished in New Zealand, Tasmania… I wish I could do more of it.”
Looking to the future: growth and fly fishing
What’s next for someone 17 years into their business?
“I’ve got a five-year plan. Grow the team, embrace AI, support more clients – and eventually, start working a three-day week.”
He’s aiming to scale his business, hire more staff, and spend more time on strategy than day-to-day delivery.
And, of course, fit in a few more fishing trips.
